Mindfulness is a real-time tool that allows us to catch ourselves in any given moment when we are suffering. Many times, this suffering is driven by “monkey mind,” that sensation of our thoughts flickering between restlessness, confusion, job, sadness, and our daily to-do list. Sound familiar? It’s this monkey mind that’s at the root of human suffering. Whether we are in bed experiencing major depression or stressed out in traffic, we are suffering. However, when we recognize it, we can take the first step in empowering ourselves to do something about it.
Today, there’s a growing body of research that demonstrates meditation’s power to decrease the symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADD, and other conditions. Meditation provides an incredible array of benefits—from improved focus to lower blood pressure. The best thing about mediation? There is no wrong way to meditate. If you learn the basics and set aside a short amount of time each day, you’ll begin to see the possibilities that this simple technique offers.
Over the years I have worked with professional leaders who struggle with addiction, anxiety, burnout and depression, etc. The veil of being a leader overshadows the need of the vulnerable human being inside. Working with peer assistance programs, professional recovery groups and at times family members to create a mindful refuge of recovery for these individuals. As the Austin population grows, so does the population of corporate leaders, business owners and licensed professionals. Career, family, and responsibility all lend themselves to a unique set of compromising issues for these men and women. I am here to support these professionals.
